Neck Pain treatment in New Albany, Indiana

Neck pain is becoming more common as use of electronic devices continues to increase. Causes of neck pain include poor posture, physical strain like an accident or injury, stress, arthritis, degenerative or herniated disc, and pinched nerves to name a few.

Why do I have Neck Pain?

Poor posture: As the head leans forward the stress on the neck increases.  On average the adult head weighs 10-12 lbs. and for every inch the head leans forward the stress on the neck increases by 10 lbs.

Auto Accident: The sudden impact of an auto accident causes injury to the muscles and ligaments of the neck even when traveling at low speed.  Whiplash is the most common form of injury from an auto accident and is caused by the rapid acceleration and deceleration of the accident.

Stress: Stress can make your neck muscles tighten leading to stiffness and pain.  Stress can make you more sensitive to pain and can make a condition that is already present worse.

Arthritis:  Joint pain and stiffness are the most common symptoms of arthritis.  The breakdown of cartilage in the joints can lead to  redness, swelling and decreased range of motion.

Disc problems (degenerative, bulging, herniated, or ruptured): Discs act as a cushion between the joints.  Degenerative discs occur when the discs show signs of wear and tear and they lose their cushion by getting thinner.  When the disc gets thinner the nerves of the spine are easily irritated or pinched.  A bulging, herniated, or ruptured disc causes pain because it can pinch or irritate the nerves of the spine.

Symptoms of neck pain

1. Muscle tightness and spasm.
2. Decrease in ability to move the head and neck.
3. Headache
4. Pain with activity or holding the head in place, such as looking at electronic devices.
5. Pain can also be referred from the neck to the upper back, shoulders, shoulder blades, arms, or hands.

Neck pain can interfere with your daily activities and reduce your quality of life if not treated. The goal in our office is to find the cause of your problem so we can make recommendations to correct it.
